The first edition of the global forum, organized by the Monaco Hydrogen Alliance association, brought together participants from more than 31 countries last November. A look back at an event that helped establish a global roadmap for sustainable transport.

AToday, hydrogen is the promise of abundant, reliable, constant and non-polluting energy” declared HSH Prince Albert II during the first edition of the Monaco Hydrogen Forum which he honored with his presence and showed his strong involvement.

    Monaco: the hydrogen asset

The two-day gathering brought together over 200 participants from 31 countries, including: Céline Caron-Dagioni, Minister of Public Works, Environment and Spatial Planning of Monaco; Mr. Jean-Baptiste Djebarri, former Minister of Transport and Chairman of Hopium, France; Alicia Eastman, President of InterContinental Energy; Roland Kaeppner, Executive Director of Green Fuels and Hydrogen, ENOWA, NEOM, Saudi Arabia; Emanuele Lauro, President, Monaco Chamber of Shipping and CEO of Scorpio, Monaco; Jonas Moberg, CEO of Green Hydrogen Organization, Switzerland; Katsuhiko Hirose, CEO of HyWealth, Japan; Elise Zoli, Partner, Wilson Sonsini, USA; Obaid Amrane, Managing Director of Ithmaar Captital, Morocco; Kasongo Numbi Kashemuka, Hydrogen Expert to the Special Advisor on Infrastructure to the Presidency, Democratic Republic of Congo, etc.

    Workshops and actions

Discussions focused on practical ways to advance the use of renewable hydrogen to clean up land, air and maritime transport. Workshops led by groups such as the Alliance’s research partner, the Graduate Institute of Geneva, and expert teams from consulting groups Deloitte and McKinsey & Company focused on two key areas under the theme of “Moving the World with Green Hydrogen”: (1) advancing innovation in renewable hydrogen and transport, and (2) building a supportive ecosystem—including regulatory, societal, financial and legal—to ensure effective implementation before the end of the decade (2030).

    Innovation Award

The forum also saw the awarding of the first Monaco Prize for Innovation in Renewable Hydrogen and Transport. Launched in partnership with strategic partner ENOWA in spring 2022, this global competition evaluated 52 solutions from 16 countries. During the forum, 8 finalist organizations were invited to present their solutions to the Prize jury: Genevo/France; Hydrox Holdings/South Africa; Hysilabs/France; Hyon/Norway; Gaussin/France; Green Independence/Italy; Zesst by Almatech/Switzerland; Helion by Alstom/France.

Genevos was awarded the 2022 Monaco Prize for Innovation in Renewable Hydrogen and Transportation by HSH Prince Albert II. Gaussin was awarded second place, with a special distinction for “Cross-Sector Adaptability Solution.” Hydrox Holdings was awarded third place, with a special distinction for “Emerging Technology Solution.” Israeli company Heven Drones, which develops hydrogen-powered drones, received a special distinction for “Most Disruptive Potential.” See you in November 2023 for the second edition of the Monaco Hydrogen Forum.

Monaco Hydrogen Alliance, chaired by John Rossant, is a non-profit association under Monegasque law aimed at promoting the use of renewable hydrogen in land, air and maritime transport. The Alliance’s members include key public and private operators in the field of hydrogen, as well as industrial leaders in transport and mobility and policy makers from around the world. To become a member of the Alliance, you can write to info@monacoh2.org.
