FoWith forty years of experience in hydrogen flow measurement, Bronkhorst is now the only manufacturer to offer such a wide range of thermal mass flow meters, covering gas flow rates from 0.014 mln/min to 11,000 m3n/h.
However, in the areas of production, ddistribution and storage of hydrogen, the thermal mass flow meter is rarely recommended. Indeed, the majority of thermal mass flow meters used in industrial gas installations are insertion flow meters, based on an anemometric principle, taking into account only the thermal conductivity of the gas (K). This technology has its limits in the case of hydrogen gas, because the thermal conductivity of hydrogen is very different from the calibration fluid (air or nitrogen). The modeling is then poor, this device is therefore prohibited for hydrogen.
The Bronkhorst thermal mass flow meter is based on a completely different principle: calorimetry. Its unique and patented sensor uses semi-calorimetric technology and consists of a capillary tube equipped with temperature sensors and heating elements. This measurement technique depends on mainly from the specific heat of the gas (Cp). Thus, the specific heat of hydrogen being similar to the calibration fluid (air or nitrogen), the modeling of hydrogen gas is reliable and its calibration is precise, offering performances close to those of a Coriolis flowmeter for a cost two to three times lower.
