Green hydrogen producer Lhyfe and German industrial and automotive supplier Schaeffler have signed an agreement to develop green hydrogen production in Bavaria.

The agreement provides for the construction and operation by Lhyfe of a green hydrogen production unit by electrolysis with a capacity of up to 15 MW at the Schaeffler plant in Herzogenaurach, Franconia. This production unit will also supply other regional players with green hydrogen.

Lhyfea global pioneer in the production of green and renewable hydrogen to decarbonize industry and mobility, and the Schaeffler Group, a leading global supplier to the automotive and industrial sectors, have signed a letter of intent for the production and purchase of green hydrogen. The aim is for Lhyfe to build and operate a hydrogen production site using water electrolysis at the Schaeffler plant in Herzogenaurach. With a capacity of up to 15 MW, the plant will produce green hydrogen on an industrial scale. Schaeffler not only aims to make its own production climate-neutral, but also to advance decarbonization in the region.

« We are proud to support a company of the size of Schaeffler AG in its transformation towards climate-neutral production by 2030. “, says Luc Graré, Head of Central and Eastern Europe at Lhyfe. Developing a rapid supply of green hydrogen remains a huge task. Industrial-scale projects like Schaeffler’s demonstrate that the technology is ready, bring confidence and security to the market and increase investment in the sector. »

The aim of this unit is to provide a production of around 3.7 tonnes of green hydrogen per day from 2025. In addition to Schaeffler, local authorities and hydrogen filling stations will be among the customers. The waste heat generated by the electrolysis of water will be fed into the industrial processes at the Schaeffler plant.

« The shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy plays a central role in our goal of climate-neutral production by 2030 “, said Andreas Schick, Member of the Board of Management for Production, Supply Chain Management and Purchasing at Schaeffler AG. By partnering with Lhyfe, we are teaming up with one of the most innovative companies to pilot the green hydrogen plant at our Herzogenaurach site. This agreement underlines Schaeffler’s commitment to sustainability and hydrogen technology. ».
