G20 – June 2019 – Karuizawa, Japan – Le Monde has an important opportunity to exploit the vast potential of hydrogen to become an essential element of a more sustainable and safer energy future, the agency announced on June 14 International Energy (IEA) in a new major report.
The in -depth study, which analyzes the current situation of hydrogen and provides guidelines on its future development, is launched by Dr. Fatih Birol, executive director of the IAI, alongside Mr. Hiroshige Seko, Japanese Minister of the ‘Economy, trade and industry, on the occasion of the meeting of the G20 energy and environment ministers in Karuizawa, Japan. The report “The future of hydrogen: to seize today’s opportunities” notes that clean hydrogen is currently receiving significant support from governments and businesses around the world, the number of policies and projects extending quickly.
Hydrogen can help meet various critical energy challenges, in particular by storing variable production of renewable energies such as solar photovoltaics and wind to better meet demand. It offers means to decarbonize a range of sectors – including long distance transport, chemicals and iron and steel – where it is difficult to significantly reduce emissions. This can also help improve air quality and strengthen energy security.
A wide variety of fuels are capable of producing hydrogen, including renewable energies, nuclear, natural gas, coal and oil. Hydrogen can be transported in the form of gas by pipeline or in liquid form by boat, much like liquefied natural gas (LNG). It can also be transformed into electricity and methane to supply houses and the food industry, and fuel for cars, trucks, ships and planes.
“Hydrogen today enjoys an unprecedented dynamic, motivated by governments that import and export energy, as well as by the renewable energy industry, public electricity and gas services, manufacturers Automobiles, oil and gas companies, large technological companies and major cities, “said Dr. Birol. “The world should not miss this unique opportunity to make hydrogen an important element of our clean and secure energy future. »»
In order to continue this momentum, the AIE report offers seven key recommendations aimed at helping governments, businesses and other stakeholders to develop their hydrogen -related projects worldwide. Among these, four areas in which the actions undertaken today can contribute to laying the basis for the growth of a global hydrogen industry in the years to come:
1. Make industrial ports neuralgic centers to intensify the use of clean hydrogen;
2. rely on existing infrastructure, such as gas pipelines;
3. Increase the use of hydrogen in transport by using it to supply cars, trucks and buses using key routes;
4. Launch the first international maritime roads in hydrogen trade.
The report also notes that hydrogen always faces significant challenges: energy cost and deployment.
