The Siemens group has just signed two important partnerships with Protium and Daimler Truck. The objectives: aim for zero emissions in truck transport and digitize the development of green hydrogen infrastructure for aircraft.
On February 15, Siemens Digital Industries Software announced that Daimler Truck had adopted its Simcenter STAR-CCM+ software with the aim of developing a new generation of CO2-neutral vehicles.2.
Indeed, Daimler Truck has chosen to use Siemens software to improve the aerodynamic performance of its trucks. On the other hand, Daimler wants to optimize the propulsion and energy management systems of e‑mobility, including battery cooling and hydrogen technology. Siemens software will also be used to design conventional combustion engines and exhaust systems as well as to reduce CO emissions2.
The two companies will also partner for the training of engineers. The aim is to have simulation specialists and secure the leading position that Daimler Truck currently occupies in the market.
Edwin Severjn, vice president and general manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Siemens Digital Industries Software, said: “Digitalization is essential for sustainable industrial innovation in the transportation sector and, giving insight into real product performance, Simecenter STAR-CCM+ can accelerate innovation for a better future.”
Siemens and Protium want to create green hydrogen infrastructure for planes
Siemens has also partnered with Protium to create digital twins to digitize the development of green hydrogen infrastructure for aviation.
This project includes the creation of a digital model of a refueling system which will serve as a basis for optimizing the existing system while limiting the costs linked to the multiplication of prototypes.
Hydrogen-related technologies are essential to stay on course for zero-emission domestic flights by 2050. Green hydrogen, produced from renewable energies, must replace fossil fuels, but current technology does not allow rapid refueling. However, this aspect is essential to make hydrogen a viable commercial element in the aviation sector.
Jen Baxter, Director of Innovation at Protium, said: “This new approach to fueling system design will improve our understanding of the capabilities of hydrogen technology. This will also accelerate the adoption of hydrogen and the transition to zero emissions.”
Protium is at the forefront of the energy transition in the aeronautics industry. For its part, Siemens Process Automation is a major provider of digital design technologies.
