Isuzu Motors Limited and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. have launched demonstration tests on public roads in Japan from Giga Fuel Cella heavy-duty truck powered by a fuel cell (FC). Scheduled to run until September 2024, these tests will allow the two companies to collect data, accumulate knowledge and identify technical issues with a view to a market introduction in 2027. The prototype used is the same type as the one on display at the Isuzu Group booth at the Japan Mobility Show 2023.
In collaboration with Isuzu Logistics Co., Ltd. and Honda Logistics Inc., the logistics companies of the Isuzu and Honda groups, respectively, demonstration tests of the Giga Fuel Cell will be carried out on public roads in Japan to verify the potential of using hydrogen fuel and the practicability of PAC trucks.
Isuzu and Honda believe that fuel cell technology, using hydrogen as a fuel without CO emissions2will be effective in achieving carbon neutrality for heavy-duty trucks. Since signing an agreement in January 2020 to conduct joint research on heavy-duty trucks with PAC, the two companies have been working on verifying the compatibility of the PAC system and heavy-duty trucks. The two companies plan to introduce the production model to the market in 2027 by fully exploiting the technology, experience and knowledge gained from the joint research.
